In the twenty years since the publication of “Martial Dance”, I have studied the philosophy of the martial arts and the teachings of the founders and masters of many styles. This knowledge has been distilled and reformulated for the modern western mind making fytedance a holistic training system that in the best traditions of the martial arts is ultimately a path not just to fitness and self-defence training but to self-enlightenment. IMPROVISED FREESTYLE.
Fytedance utilises a wide range of combat techniques from many arts and teaches you to employ them in a dance format that works with both classical and contemporary music. Fytedance is both choreographed and improvised. The basic moves – the baseline movement, is learned by all as a superstructure on which to add an alphabet of stances, strikes and kicks, but the actual order of the techniques is improvised and changed with every dance. The student is taught to release the repertoire of learned techniques from the unconscious in time to the beat of the music.

BUDO
What is the point of a martial art in the form of a dance? Martial arts have their diverse points of emphasis. Tai chi is more about health and the development of chi power than about physical combat whereas karate prioritises the self-defence aspects of “budo”. Budo is the generic term for the martial arts and means the “way of the Warrior”. Fytedance is martial dance. I didn’t invent martial dance – warrior dance is as old as war itself but fytedance is my own style of martial dance and martial dance is an aspect of Budo - the path of the warrior.
